During the Victorian period, stacks were on top of the buildings and grand homes. They were beautiful, sometimes
being very ornate and carved. When the industrial revolution came around; the stacks became a thing of the past. It
its place came the chimney pots. The Victorians were very proud and hard working people and valued things they
considered would improve their property. The different design of the chimney pots was largely due to the cure for
the down draught.
Anyone that has a fireplace will probably have chimney pots. A lot of people think they started in England, but
in reality they were from all over the world. Some records found go back as far as the thirteenth century for
chimney pots, but America and most of Europe were to discover them in the eighteen hundreds. The draft up the
chimney is increased with chimney pots, or maybe the fireplace would have more than one.
People had to have them when the fireplace was the only source of heat. They had to have something that would
pull the toxic fumes out of the house, because coal was the only heat material at that time.
Sometime in the nineteen twenties the chimney pots were no longer used when new houses being built. Oil burners
were taking over America as the leading source of heat. Since the chimney pots were no longer being used in
existing houses, the mortar around the chimney began to crack and crumble. Many just took it down, not wanting to
preserve the old chimney pots because usually of the cost.
Chimney pots re making a come back today. They are not so expensive that people cannot put them on top of the
roofs anymore. They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and extremely easy to install. They tend to add
beauty and charm to homes and sometimes professional buildings. If having an older home, by putting up chimney
pots, will certainly add to the value of the home. Or even a new home can look elegant with chimney pots.
Extremely easy to install chimney pots will add to the home, not take away from it. There are many companies
today that build or restore old chimney pots. The price range of course depends on how big or fancy you want the
chimney pots. They usually start around three hundred dollars and go up to thousands of dollars.
If not wanting to erect chimney pots on the home, there are many people now that are finding and using old ones
for gardens and planters. If found bishop chimney pots are worth the money as it certainly adds charm to any yard,
if nothing else than sitting it in the yard. Not so elegant are cannon chimney pots, and yes, it looks just like a
cannon. They are not very pretty but do make a nice planter for draping plants such as ivy, which can hide the
plainness.
So whether chimney pots will go on top of the home or used for planting flowers, they will add charm to any
house or yard.
